Have you ever wondered how Pizza boxes even originated? Well, I have a story to tell and it was told by Jar Vardhan Saraoghi who is an Indian top boss in the eco-friendly packaging industry.
So how exactly did the Pizza Box come about?
It all started in Naples, Italy, but let us be real, who doesn’t love a good pizza? Even our Nigerian ancestors would have traded their jollof rice for a slice (just kidding).
Fast forward to the 18th century, and pizza was the star of the show in Naples. Back then, it was not the takeaway superstar we know today, people bought it on the streets and devoured it on the spot, like a hungry Lagosian at a suya joint.
As visitors flooded Naples, pizzerias sprouted up faster than a danfo bus on the Lekki-Epe Expressway”. The big question then was, “How to make pizza a ‘takeaway’ option, so people can enjoy it at home, not just in our pizzeria?‘” One clever pizzeria owner in Naples was like, “Ah-ha! I’ve got it!” He created a metal container with a lid, and it worked decently . But, those metal containers were heavy, expensive and not very convenient.
It was not until the mid-20th century that the pizza box, as we know it today, came to save the day. The Corrugated Box Industry was like, “Voilà! We’ve got the solution!” And, just like that, the pizza box was born. It was lightweight, affordable, and disposable.
The Pizza box was an instant hit, and its success was due to its simplicity and convenience. Pizzeria’s could now deliver pizza’s without compromising on quality, and customers could enjoy their favorite food without breaking the bank.
